"GiveDirectly's work and the support we received were so helpful in numerous ways that most families are currently living a better life. Many constructed new houses and others cleared their children's school fees after receiving the money. They did everything well, and I wish the program would be back to the village after completing the other they are yet to finish. I saw nothing wrong with the entire process and am thankful I was part of the beneficiaries."

"Despite the difficult burden of paying the school fees for my eleven children, I have faith that I will soon open a small business that will provide a steady source of income for my family. Many people are interested in venturing into maize buying and selling maize because it has a high demand in the neighborhood. The part-time work I have been doing is currently my only source of income, and I am hoping that the little amount of money I have been saving after buying food for my family every day will help me get my business off the ground."

"I am grateful for the work well done by GiveDirectly in our village. Many were suffering a lot before the transfers came in, but at the moment everything has completely changed in every household. Those who had no hope of ever living in good houses are now enjoying good living conditions, and even their farming activities have improved a great deal. Everyone was treated fairly - a reason that no one complains to date, but thankful for the generous support."

"My dream is to raise funds in some way and start a groceries shop. I would intend to sell veggies and fruits at Bamba Market as a potential secondary source of income for me and my family. This would greatly help in getting us and keeping us financially stable."

"It hurts seeing my husband abandon me and my kids to be with another woman, and as such, I have had to pick up the financial slack and make ends meet. I would love to start a business selling mahamri and other food stuff to the kids in school. I feel this would greatly increase my income and put me in a position where I have more control over the fate of my kids, as well as myself."

"In order to understand the impact that GiveDirectly transfers had on my life, one must consider the circumstances we were in as a family, at the time. I had previously been a house manager at Ganze, earning KES. 4,000 per month as a day bug, before it all went away. My husband was also and still is, out of work and we still had to provide for our 5 kids. With the cash injection, we were able to build a house. I bought 11, seven foot, Iron sheets, at KES. 9, 700, along with framing timber at KES. 70 a piece and with that I was able to accomplish my building dream. Having resorted to tilling my 1.5 acre farm, the drought has been hitting us heavily, and meeting expenses such as school fees for my eldest 4 who go to Ganze and require KES. 1,500. For the one in Grade 5, KES. 1,000 ,for the one in Grade 4, KES. 3,000 for the one in Grade 2 KES. 890 to keep learning at Ganze Primary school, while my youngest in PP1 needs KES.400, per term. Since I lost my job in June after getting sick, GiveDirectly has been my only refuge, words cannot begin to describe how i feel inside!"

"Living in a home that had no toilet was very shameful and unhygienic. Not only that I was tired of going to the bush for nature calls but also I could not withstand the shame of taking my visitors to the same place. When I got the second transfer, I spent $210 to construct a toilet. As we speak the toilet is ready and I am happy because the shamefulness is no longer here with me neither the unforeseen outbreak of diseases will be minimized. Thereafter, I used $180 to renovate my house by constructing some pillars to make it firm. I also bought two goats for $74 in addition to the cow that I bought using the first transfer. Since I had a shortage of chairs at my home, I bought four pieces for $29. After that, I used the remaining amount to buy food for my family."
