received a zeroth payment.
"While in the village, livestock keeping has been my primary source of livelihood, along with subsistence farming. Raising animals has proven to be a rewarding venture, and I currently have several goats and cows. As I breed them, my herd continues to grow, allowing me to sell some for extra income when needed. I’m glad that my recent transfer enabled me to buy three more goats, which I've happily added to my herd. Even though I lack a stable income, I have faith that as my livestock numbers increase, I’ll be able to sell some to meet my financial needs, support my family, and cover the educational expenses for my three children."

"I was tending to my livestock in the grazing field that afternoon when I got a message on my phone. As I checked it, an overwhelming wave of happiness washed over me when I saw it was an Mpesa notification confirming that I had received my first transfer. This was a moment of joy for me, as it opened up new opportunities to tackle things I had been unable to do due to financial limitations."

"Food insecurity is the biggest challenge due to lack of a stable source of income. We live in a semi - arid area, and we never harvest anything from the farms due to drought. We purchase all the food stuff from the little money we get and this is difficult."

"The challenge I'm facing currently is associated with my livestock. I'm a goat keeper and recently they have been adversely affected by diseases such as East coast fever. This has led to the death of some of my animals which has come because I don't have money for treatment. This has affected me both financially and psychologically because I depend on Livestock."

"Being an arid area, there is always competition for water and the limited pasture for our livestock. Consequently, this region is prone to cattle rustling and banditry. Early this year while fleeing from an attack, I lost over 20 sheep to diseases due to movement from place to place. Having no other livelihood, my only source of food and income was greatly affected so much such that I have had to sleep hungry several times. My worry is that I will not be able to build enough wealth with the unprecedented threat to security."

"Our village is located in a hot and dry climate, just below the mountains of the highlands. Due to insufficient rain over the years, we cannot do farming but depend mainly on our livestock. Food insecurity is a big challenge, we sell our livestock to buy food. It's also expensive to buy food daily. This has depleted our livestock, henceforth we're always worried about what the future holds."

Faith
received a zeroth payment.
"I had been using a traditional bed to sleep on, which was not ideal because I often suffered from backaches. I decided to use $160 from the transfer to buy a mattress and a bed. I spent $290.6 to buy iron sheets to renovate my house roof. I also used $95 to purchase other building materials to extend my house by adding one more room since my entire family had been living in a single room. With the remaining $4.40, I bought food for my family."

"I was feeling unwell and resting inside my house when I received the transfer message. My husband woke me up and asked me to check my phone. When I checked, I confirmed that I had received the transfer. My husband and I were both overjoyed because this was such good news for us. My first thought was to renovate the roof of our mud house, as the iron sheets had been leaking for a long time."

"Before receiving the cash transfer, life was very hard and unbearable. We struggled to get enough food, and the mud house we lived in was completely destroyed by pests. After receiving the cash transfer, I was able to build a proper house for my family."

"One evening, while I was preparing supper, I heard a message alert on my phone. I asked my son to check it and see what the message was about. After checking, he confirmed that it was the transfer notification. I was so excited because I knew most of our troubles would finally go away. My first thought was about how I could now build a proper house, as the one we were living in had been destroyed."
