"Since receiving the GiveDirectly transfer, the most significant change in my life has been becoming debt-free. This newfound financial freedom has been a game-changer for both me and my business. Previously, I would often have to take out loans to boost my tomato business stock. But now, with the funds from GiveDirectly, I no longer need to rely on loans. This has relieved a great burden and allowed me to invest in my business without worrying about debt."

Jimmy
received a $343 initial payment.
"Within our household, my wife and I reside with our 7 children. 4 of them are my biological offspring, while the remaining 3 are children of my late sister, who passed away 4 years ago. I assumed guardianship of my late sister's children, as they had no one else to care for them. Among the 7 children, there are 5 girls and 2 boys. Currently, they all share a single room, which is far from ideal, particularly as some of them are entering their teenage years. Providing separate rooms would afford them the privacy they need as they continue to grow. My wife is currently unemployed, while I earn a living as a local palm wine vendor. However, my earning are barely enough adequately provide for our family and building a house. Therefore, I allocated $420 of the transfer to construct a 2-bedroom house, as our current dwelling is insufficient for all of us. Though the house is still under construction, once completed, it will afford our family the necessary privacy. Seeing the house in progress excites all of us and we are eagerly waiting for its completion so that the kids can move in have their privacy. Additionally, I spent $130 to connect water to our home. Currently, we do not have running water, and my wife faces considerable challenges in fetching water from a distant source."

Rachel
received a $343 initial payment.
"My aspiration was to provide my children with comfortable and cozy sleeping arrangements. Now, my children are delighted and enjoy peaceful sleep compared to before, when discomfort caused them to toss and turn frequently and have restless nights. With their improved sleep quality, I can now focus on expanding my business without the constant worry of my children struggling to rest on worn-out beds. With the capital boost in my tailoring business, I can now channel more effort into increasing our family income to meet our needs and also help my husband more in servicing the loan we took to buy a Shamba and clear it earlier so that we can focus on other income generating investments."

Kadogo
received a $343 initial payment.
"I am a widower; my wife passed away some years ago, leaving me with our daughter. According to our cultural norms, it wasn't acceptable for a man to live alone with his daughter, and as a result, my daughter was taken away from me. My deepest desire had always been to reunite with her under the same roof, but financial constraints hindered me from marrying another wife. Despite my efforts of burning and selling charcoal and saving for the dowry that had been requested, the likelihood seemed distant, leaving me feeling depressed as I missed out on witnessing my daughter's growth milestones. Therefore, I spent $350 of the transfer and added it to my dowry savings so that I could get a wife and bring my daughter home, making me a happy and proud father. I then set aside $200 of the transfer for food because we come from a place where hunger is very prominent. Having some money saved that would help us during hunger gives me some assurance that when my daughter comes, she won't have to sleep hungry."

"Currently, I find my life so tough because I do not have any reliable source of income to support my family of 6. Since my husband passed away 4 years ago, he left me with all the responsibilities of being the sole breadwinner. Charcoal burning and other casual community jobs are what I have depended on for a long time. The income from these activities is what has been supporting my children in school but their studies have always been affected due to spending more time out of school. As I speak, my daughter who is supposed to join high school is still at home due to lack of money. Hence, I consider financial constraints as my biggest challenge."

"Despite the struggles with limited sources of income, such as subsistence and livestock farming, I am determined to pursue several initiatives in the coming year and beyond. The small plots of land I currently farm on are heavily impacted by droughts, resulting in insufficient feed for my livestock and hindering their growth and breeding. To address this challenge, I plan to utilize the proceeds from these unreliable sources to purchase more fencing materials. By fencing additional farms, I aim to cultivate more grass and maize, with the surplus produce, including maize stalks, being sold to meet the demand for livestock feed. Throughout this endeavor, I am grateful for the unwavering support of my daughter, who has been a steadfast helper during the receipt of transfers. Despite having her own family, she remains committed to supporting my ideas and implementing the proposals I put forward. I intend to continue involving her in all my plans this year, hopeful that our collaborative efforts will yield positive results in the future."
