received a $403 initial payment.
"I am grateful to GiveDirectly's program because it was through their support that my son underwent a successful eye surgery that nearly made him blind. I could see him struggling to even read and concentrate on his classwork. He was born with a growth in his eye that was hard to treat. He was referred for surgery many years ago, but it never happened because of some financial constraints. He was able to undergo the surgery after I got the first transfer, and he has now healed and is going on with his studies like other students. I am at peace as his parent because he is now fit and able to study, which makes the biggest difference in my daily life."

Racheal
received a $403 initial payment.
"I have been able to accomplish some things through the transfer that, to me, seemed impossible due to a lack of finances. I was sheltering in a weak, small, and shanty grass thatched hut. I was not comfortable at all, I had to replace the roof with new grass, and it was not stable enough. I was worried that whenever it rained, it would collapse. When I received the money, my priority was to build a decent and an iron roofed house. I thus spent a bigger portion of my first transfer on buying building poles, iron sheets, nails and paid for the labour involved in the construction. I am happy that soon I will be sheltering in my dream house, after years of waiting. I also spent part of the transfer on paying fees for my children. They were constantly sent home for lack of fees and I am happy that I cleared the arrears and were allowed to continue with their studies. Lastly, I did some shopping on household items such as new utensils as well as buying food tha could last for more than a month."

Kashutu
received a $403 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life so far is that through the transfer, I managed to replace the old mats that I have been using for years to sleep on with a new bed and a mattress. The only time I remember sleeping on good bedding was during the years when I was new in my marriage. I was not able to buy new ones, and as years went by, I found myself using mats and traditional beds which did not offer a good sleep. I am happy that I can now afford to sleep soundly after receiving the transfer. I am also renovating my house using building stones to make it more stable since it was built using mud, which is temporary and sometimes cannot withstand heavy rains."

Mariamu
received a $403 initial payment.
"I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I am now building a spacious house in order to accommodate my children. They were seeking shelter from neighbors at night, which even affected their studies. I managed to buy enough building materials to build the new, spacious house. Once I move to my new house, I will give the old house to my children, and save them the trouble of seeking shelter elsewhere. Also, to curb food shortages in my household, I invested the transfer in ploughing my four-acre farm and hired labourers for timely planting. I am assured of getting a good harvest which will ensure food security in my household since my farm is fully utilised."

Alice
received a $403 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, nails, and building poles in order to build a new house. My current house is not spacious enough to accommodate my children, and this has troubled me since they have to seek shelter from the neighbors. My plan is to complete the new house, and when I move in, I will leave them with the old house and save them the trouble of wandering at night looking for shelter while they are still young. In addition to this, I also spent Ksh. 10,000 on buying three goats, which I added to the existing goat shed. I currently own sixteen goats that I am rearing in my compound. My expectation is that they will reproduce, increase in number, and sell to pay fees for my children. I do not have a stable source of income, and I believe that these goats will greatly help me in case of financial constraints. I finally spent the remaining portion on buying new school uniforms and paying fees for my children, as well as buying food for my family and some household items that I lacked."

Dzendere
received a $403 initial payment.
"I had begun building a new house, but it stalled for some time since I did not have enough financial resources to purchase the remaining building materials. When I received the transfer, I managed to buy the materials and went on with the construction to completion. I purchased 20 pieces of iron sheets and timber for roofing. Apart from this, I also purchased three goats for Ksh. 7500 and added them to my existing goat shed. These are assets that I can rely on, sell the offspring and raise fees for my children in the near future as they progress with their education. I also paid Ksh 5,000 to clear fee arrears for my five children currently in school. I am at peace now because they were allowed to continue with their studies, and I have ample time to prepare for the next payment. I finally did some shopping for food, which included a 90kg bag of maize that can last for a month, and ensured that food was plentiful in my household."

Sidi
received a $403 initial payment.
"I spent a bigger portion of my first transfer on buying building materials which include building poles and 25 iron sheets in order to build a new house. I have been living in a grass thatched house that was in a bad shape, and leaking uncontrollably whenever it rains. Also, I was replacing the grasses every month which was tiresome. I am at peace now that i managed to build a decent iron roofed house, which has greatly relieved me of the stress of replacing the grasses every month. Apart from the house, I also spent Ksh 4000 and purchased a goat. I had some but later I sold them to settle my financial needs, and I am glad that starting again. I am keeping this goat and let it reproduce and have many of them. I can readily sell the offspring to settle my financial needs. Lastly, I bought foodstuffs such as maize flour and paying for daily household expenses. This ensured that we do not lack food, since I bought enough that could last for more than a month."
