What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before withdrawing the second transfer, I sat to prioritize how best I could spend it. After constructive thinking, I opted to invest the whole amount into my daughter's education since she was joining the university. Since my husband and I are casual laborers we could not manage to take her to the university. Therefore, we saw that was a prudent idea to pay the whole amount to the school to get ample time to source for the next semester's fee. I am happy that she is settled comfortably in the university. After doing so, I felt relieved and I had peace of mind.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did very well by allowing us to choose how to spend the money. This liberty of deciding on my own how to spend the cash has impressed me and I am grateful for the organization. Without the freedom to choose how to spend the money, maybe my satisfaction and happiness level would not have hit this notch. Sincerely, I did not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main focus now is to ensure my university daughter takes her course comfortably. Currently, she is in year one, and hopefully, through the efforts, I make I would like to see her through her four years on campus comfortably. To achieve this I have been saving in one of the financial institutions from the casual work my husband and I have been doing will greatly assist us to see our dream coming to pass.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer to purchase building materials including poles, timbers, iron sheets, nails, and paid the labour costs. This was for the construction of a new spacious two-roomed house for my family. Before, we were staying in an old, leaking roofed house. We were spending sleepless nights due to the poor conditions on our roof. In addition, I bought a mattress for KES 7,000 this is because I was using rugs as bedding which was not comfortable as I always felt body pains. Lastly, I used KES 4000 to take my son to the hospital, he had a problem with his sight and I packed the finances to take him to a specialist. I am happy that he is currently doing well and is recovering well.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a spacious house for my family is the biggest difference in my life. I had desired to own a decent house but I lacked the finances to acquire the building materials. We were always spending sleepless nights during the rain period and sometimes we used to seek shelter from our neighbors when the situation became unbearable. Waking up from a nice house has restored my longest desire something that I am grateful for.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 2 pm, I was at home after coming from my business selling local coconut wine. I was taking relaxing before I could open my business. I heard my daughter-in-law celebrating claiming that she had received the transfer. I called my helper to confirm my account balance and he notified me that I had received the transfer too. I was extremely happy about receiving the transfer and we both rejoiced with my spouse. We started the plans of withdrawing the cash since we had already planned on how best to use it.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the challenge that iam currently facing. This is because I am a palm wine vendor. The income of this job is as low as KES 600 per week. Due to this, I have been struggling a lot to put food on the table and sometimes I seek help from relatives something that ashames me a lot.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter secured a casual job in town last year August. She has been very supportive to the family. During the festival season she bought new clothes this makes very happy and iam proud of her.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a decent house for my family. Currently I am living in a small house which is leaking during rainy seasons. My plan is to spend KES 55000 to construct a two bedroom house that is spacious enough to accommodate my family of 3, and make us live a decent life. I will further spend KSH 15 to buy a bed and mattress to avoid the cold floor. The remaining amount of my transfers will be invested in my daughter's educational needs.
