Naomi
received a $154 initial payment.
"I received my first transfer around 4:00 p.m., which I confirmed via a notification message from the mobile money service. I was intrigued and quickly checked my account balance, where I discovered that the amount received matched the promise I was expecting from GiveDirectly. I was with my mother, who had also received similar information, and after my brother confirmed the available balance in my mother's, we all burst out cheerfully and thanked God for the provision. I was unable to collect it on the same day, but I transferred $60 to my mother's account, which she used to purchase retail goods for a joint business venture."

Kimoi
received a $346 second payment.
"Even though I am relieved and happy that the enormous burden of school fee payment for the four adopted grandchildren has been lifted, I am concerned about how I will keep them in school once all transfers have been exhausted. At the moment, my only new goal is to focus on raising more money and saving money from the help I have been receiving from my daughter so that I can use it to pay for future school terms. I also want to provide enough food for my current family of six by starting a new subsistence farming venture and encouraging my grandchildren to look for casual labor on local farms when they get home from school."

"Scarcity of money that has made living conditions so hard that in my family we can hardly have 1 meal, and also as a family. We have so much desired to move to a safe place free from Landslides but we don't have means to do so."

"I wake up early in the morning, feeling the weight of the day ahead of me already on my shoulders. I am a husband, a father, and a businessman. My wife and I deal in very different commodities - she sells vegetables like cabbages and tomatoes, while I sell cows, goats, and hens. We work hard every day to provide for our family, but the profits we make are never enough to cover all our expenses.
One of my biggest concerns is paying for my children's education. Education is the key to a better future, but it comes with a hefty price tag. I often find myself dipping into the capital of my business just to make ends meet, but this only adds to the stress and worry that I feel every day.
As if financial constraints aren't enough, I also have to deal with the unpredictable weather. Heavy rains are a common occurrence in my village, and they can be very dangerous. I worry, especially at night, when I'm trying to sleep, that a landslide could sweep me and my family away in our sleep. It has happened before in our village, and the thought of it happening again is terrifying."

Quayee
received a $222 initial payment.
"I had already forgotten the money because almost everyone in town received their money except me. My money entered my phone on December 7th, but I did not pay attention to the phone because I had given up; I was in network area on the 21st and decided to just check my phone and there the money was. I was so happy and started dancing. I quickly visited the people who used to mock me and told them my good news. I was the happiest man in the town that day. As I was celebrating, I stated making plans for my money."

Moses
received a third payment.
"I have four children going to school in Pleebo; I paid their school fees with my third transfer. My oldest son is a 22 year old lad in the 12th grade class in CRC High school, whilst my younger son who is 20 years of age is in the 9th grade in St Francis Catholic School. My third son is 18 years old attending St Francis Catholic school in the 7th grade class and my last son is 5 years old attending Demonstration School in 1st grade. I spent my transfer on my children's school fees because their future is very important to me and they have to be educated to get good jobs to improve their lives in the future.
I spent the rest of my transfer on purchasing 4 bags of cement to plaster my house and make it look better. Making my place decent will give me better respect in my community."

Pah
received a $233 third payment.
"What I hope to accomplish in the next year or more is to see my house to a finished level. Once my house is completed, I will be free and gain respect in the town. I will also be happy to invite my family to come and visit me and we can happily, freely, and comfortably sleep at night even when it rains."

"GiveDirectly is helping us to own properties and solve other problems we are faced with through the cash they send to us. They know how to talk to us calmly and they do not pick and choose. They do not steal from us either. GiveDirectly doesn't have a bad name."

Ngumbao
received a $423 initial payment.
"The ability to feed my family has made the biggest difference since receiving the money. As a farmer, my only means of guaranteeing that my family would have food came from the farm and the rains. I have had to get by on one meal for the past three years because I don't have enough money to buy enough food to eat three times a day. After receiving the money, everything improved. I now eat three meals per day and follow a healthy diet. My body has gained weight, which is a sign that everything is fine."
