Jumaa
received a $28 fifth payment.
"I am a single parent surviving on casual jobs such as burning and selling charcoal which does not pay much. The transfer so far has been helpful to me, I have been able to pay fees on time for my son. My goal is that through the monthly transfers, I will be able to better my life and that of my son. My plan is to see him excel in his academics as he is joining high school and I am hopeful that he will continue with his studies without interruptions concerning fees. Apart from school, I am also planning to buy more livestock like chickens and goats. I currently have 6 chickens and 1 goat. Since casual jobs are unreliable, this livestock will greatly help me as they multiply. I will sell the offspring and raise money to cater for my future financial needs like fees for my son."

Winnie
received a $146 initial payment.
"The tremendous distinction in my day-to-day life described before is the cash transfer gave me an expectation for a better tomorrow. The reason why I say this is because I was allowed time to decide what I wanted to do with the money with no conditions. I feel delighted and overjoyed to have achieved my goals in a short period. I have no worries whatsoever about where to get money for the irrigation of my farm in the coming planting season. This is all attributed to the cash transfer. I'm happy for the support of uplifting our lives."

Jenniffer
received a $146 initial payment.
"Being a single mother is not easy as I raise my only son in this current tough economy of our country. My parents are aged and thus can't look after themselves and I'm tasked with ensuring they are well taken care of. I do farming. When my initial transfer got to me, I used $90 on buying seedlings in readiness for the next planting season. I later bought fencing wire mesh for $50 to put around my piece of land. Additionally, I spent $30 buying clothes seeing that it was a festive season. The remaining amount was spent on buying sugar. The transfer made life simpler for us. In my entire life, I've not witnessed such a noble gesture, and we are privileged to be among the beneficiaries."

Radi
received an initial payment.
"I remember I was at home when my neighbours passed by excitedly speaking of having received their initial cash transfers. At that time, my phone was off, making it difficult for me to check whether this was true. I felt helpless. I couldn't verify whether the information is true. Fortunately, I was able to switch it on at a later time, and upon checking my MPESA balance, I was filled with joy on realizing I had received money from GiveDirectly. Words couldn't express the joy I felt. I was relieved that the support of GiveDirectly was timely and it came at a time when I was planning on irrigation of my farm for the planting season."

Fiath
received a $146 initial payment.
"Two days after receiving my first transfer, I went to a nearby shopping center, where I collected the entire amount and spent $10 on drugs for my goats. I spent $170 on iron sheets, 7 timber, 6 frames, and $10 on transportation because I needed to build a new house, which is still in progress. I started the construction the next day after paying the $40 labor charge. I have always lived in a small house with my family of seven, and because I am the second wife in a polygamous family, my husband has not helped much with the construction work because he has responsibilities in the other household. I am yet to finish the construction and will move in once I have obtained all of the necessary construction materials."

Bildad
received a $162 initial payment.
"I used $100 of my first transfer to purchase two. Goats. We live in a drought-prone area where irrigation facilitates farming, and raising goats is a better plan that can be implemented cheaply. I am currently living on my friend's property because I am unable to purchase my own. With the livestock project I'm currently launching, I hope to sell the goats after they've been bred in order to purchase some land. I spent $80 to help my spouse's clothing business grow. She's been selling them around the village, and the profits have helped me buy household goods with the money I have earned from my construction work. I also spent the remaining $20 on food for my current two-person family."
