Douglas
received a $162 initial payment.
"I am grateful that I was able to prepare my acre of land for plantation after receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I bought butternut seed for $50 and paid labor charges during the plantation after blowing my piece of land with the first $50. My farm, as well as the farms of other villagers, are now irrigated thanks to a county government initiative that has aided us throughout the severe drought. I also put $30 toward the hire-purchase of a solar panel and lighting equipment. Since then, I have been making daily payments of $1, which will continue for the next year. I now have a well-lit home with security lights that have reduced wild animal attachment to livestock. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on household food items for my family of two."

Cosmas
received a $146 initial payment.
"Improved agricultural practices on my leased land, as well as the growing poultry project after purchasing 8 chickens, have made the most difference since receiving my first transfer. At the moment, I am confident that a better harvest will ensure food security for my family of three. I am grateful for the irrigation pipes channeled to our lands as part of the government project, which have greatly aided us during the current droughts."

received a $162 initial payment.
"At around 4:00 p.m., I was at home when I received a message from GiveDirectly. I was surprised because the name "GiveDirectly" was not mentioned anywhere in the message. I was able to confirm with a friend who had also received the same amount after asking around. I could not doubt any longer because it was the only money I was expecting, but I did inform my family before agreeing on spending."

Regina
received a $146 initial payment.
"I sent $30 to my two boarding secondary school sons traveling home after their schools closed on the first transfer. The next day, I collected the remaining funds and gave a portion of them to my husband, who needed to see a doctor because he was not feeling well. He has a growth on his back that has been gradually growing since he was unable to afford treatment. His doctor confirmed that it was a malignant growth that he suspected was a tumor during his first visit. Despite the fact that he was charged $80 for the consultation and some medication he brought with him, he has so far visited the same hospital, and they chose to prescribe him herbal medication that causes the tumor to grow faster and then burst. Every visit costs him $80, and we have had to sell some of the properties we had to meet the cost. I am relieved that his condition has improved and remain optimistic that he will recover soon. I later used the remainder to buy food for my family of eight, which we still use today."

Grace
received an initial payment.
"I spent $170 of my first transfer on construction materials in order to build a small shop on our piece of land next to the road. I purchased roofing frames, metal bars to reinforce the walls, and iron sheets that, while insufficient to complete the construction of both the walls and the roof, I believe adding some using the subsequent transfer will complete the project. I had to put the construction on hold and will resume once I obtain all of the missing construction materials. I am excited to open a retail shop as an additional source of income because it will serve the immediate village and save them the long walk to the nearby shopping center, which is 2 kilometers away. I used the remaining funds to pay for the transportation of construction materials from the shopping center to my doorstep. I am grateful for the assistance and hope to begin construction work within a month."

Boaz
received a $162 initial payment.
"I received the first transfer from GiveDirectly around 4:11 p.m. after receiving a message notification that, while the source did not appear to be GiveDirectly, I could not confuse it with other money in my account. I also received confirmation from my friends at the nearby shopping center, who had received the same message. I informed my spouse that evening and picked up the entire transfer the next day when we needed it."

Kache
received a $444 initial payment.
"Since I had no defined source of income apart from burning charcoals, I opted to buy a motorbike for business. The motorbike is used for ferrying people from one destination to the other. In purchasing the motorbike, I bought it in hire-purchase because the amount could not allow me to buy it in cash. Therefore, I paid a deposit of $200 and I am paying a weekly installment of $5 for two years. I am very happy that I now have an income-generating activity. Thereafter, I bought two chairs for $85 since I did not have any chairs at my house. For the remaining amount, I opted to use it in buying some food since that was the main challenge I was passing through."

Dama
received a $28 tenth payment.
"Being jobless, I intend to start a small business vending dry fish and tomatoes around the village. This will be a reliable source of income for myself and my family. Currently, I am not working after giving birth to my second-born last month. In addition, I planning to boost the livestock rearing that I started with the transfer by purchasing more goats. This will be my future investment for the children's education. As of now, my firstborn is in grade 2 and is expected to join the junior secondary school in grade 6."

Kahunda
received a $28 fifth payment.
"Currently, I have a goal of starting an investment in livestock specifically goat rearing. I understand it will take quite some time because the amount I get cannot do huge things at ago but with determination and saving discipline, I will make it. As much as I would like to start with a cow, it will not be possible because the amount I receive has to be budgeted for other things such as food and school fees for my children and also the savings to be there. Due to this, buying a cow will be an outcome of the goats' investment which I plan to start with this year's transfers."

Kauchi
received a $28 ninth payment.
"First, I would like to register my gratitude to the organization for the assistance. I used to struggle to make ends meet in terms of getting some food but nowadays the stress has been reduced. Currently, I have a goal that I would like to accomplish by the end of the year. Since I have been sleeping on the floor using some boxes and rags as bedding, I would like to get a bed and a mattress. This will make me sleep comfortably unlike now. Apart from that, I would also like to get some poultry that is; chicken or goats depending on their availability and how affordable they will be. This is because I want to have an investment that will aid me to cater to my family so that I save the amount I will be receiving from GiveDirectly for a bigger project with time."
