Cellestine
received a $433 second payment.
"Our construction of a two bedroom house that we started after receiving the first transfer was not yet complete. Receiving this transfer was a boost on the construction work as we spent $300 on obtaining paints, several bags of cement, and settling the labor charges. We had been hoping to see the construction complete which we actually did later on. I also spent $200 to buy two mattresses and two beds for my three children and myself. With the remaining $30, I purchased household goods that included foodstuff and other kitchenware that was still missing. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the great support that has boosted our construction work and also enabled us to add some food to our baskets."

"Water has been a major challenge in my village, we have to walk for long distances in search of it and sometimes even spending the whole day. When I received the second transfer I used $400 to buy the needed pipes, materials and paid for the meter. The remaining cash of $100 I used to buy food stuff that would last us for a month plus."

Joseph
received a $433 second payment.
"When I received the second transfer, my first priority was to spend some of it on buying trees in order to build a new house for my family of two. We are currently living in a small house with a separate kitchen that needs to be renovated as well since its roof is made of grass. I am relieved that all of the preparations are finished, and I am looking forward to have the house construction completed and my family getting in. This costed me $400 to have the house stand up. The remaining $130, I used to buy enough food stuff to last us about one month and some missing furniture for the house."

Saidi
received a $433 second payment.
"I had fees arrears for my two children who are in school and thus after receiving the second transfer, I used $100 to clear the balance so that my kids would continue with their studies uninterrupted. I further spent $200 to buy iron sheets, cement, timber, nails and other building materials that I would used to finish up my house construction which I had began with the first transfer. I also bought a solar panel worth $30 that will be helpful for lighting up the house at night, my children needed this so much since they always have school assignments to do at night. I also paid my wife's dowry of $150 to my in-laws."

Hinzano
received a $433 second payment.
"When I received the first transfer, I bought a motor bike but I did not manage to pay for it completely. From the second transfer I spent $100 to clear off the balance. The bike has been a great source of income for our family since on a good day, I can make at least $5-$10 from ferrying people from one place to another. I have always wanted to have my own house, thus I was able to accomplish this dream by using $400 to construct a house. This means that we now have a decent place for shelter with my family. The remaining $30 I used to purchase enough foodstuffs to sustain our family for quite sometime."

Penina
received a $433 second payment.
"Earlier on when I received the first transfer, I started on building a house since the one we were staying in was dilapidated. Unfortunately, I did not manage to have it completed and so I finished it up with the second transfer were I spend $200. The beddings we were using were also worn out and thus I had to get some new ones which costed me $100. When things were tough, I had taken a small loan from a microfinance to help with the daily expenses. I used $45 to repay it back since I had pending arrears for four months. In addition, I used $60 of the remaining transfer to buy food for my family for the next two months. I added some more chicken worth $40 and purchased a bag of chicken feed for $30. I used the rest of the money to buy new clothes for my kid and myself. I am grateful for the generous support we received, as well as the transformation I have seen in my family since then."

Rehema
received a second payment.
"GiveDirectly allowed us an opportunity to decide how best we can change our expectations for everyday comforts in our families through the free cash transfer we received. Dissimilar to different associations, GiveDirectly's help was genuine and the enrollment process was fair to the point that nobody needed to pay anything to the staff to be selected. I believe this is the best program ever that fulfilled our expectations after spending on the plans we had."
