"I currently have a son who graduated from high school last year. Before 2023 comes to an end, I want to enroll him in the college of his choice. By doing this, I will encourage his young brothers who are still in secondary school to put in a lot of effort. I am confident that I will succeed despite my small savings from my casual labor salary since willpower knows no bounds."

"Previously, the kind of farming that I was doing was so traditional that I could not even harvest enough maize for family consumption. When I received my first transfer, I invested so much in farming as I also bought fertilizers and maize seedlings from agrovet. I am looking forward to get some good investment returns as I am projecting on harvesting enough maize both for domestic use and commercial purpose. This accomplishment means that I will be able able to earn income from selling the produce and pay school fees for my children and cater for other needs."

"In the short time since we received the transfers from GiveDirectly, a lot has changed in our village. Because each household had a unique plan based on their needs, the freedom to decide on spending encouraged diverse results. I enjoyed every step of the enrollment process, and financial assistance was the ultimate solution to many of our problems. All of the information provided to us prior to enrollment was clear and helped us make informed decisions, knowing that we would never receive similar assistance from GiveDirectly again."

"If it was not for the transfers, I would not have managed to build the rental shop or bought the cow. This shows that, through unconditional cash transfers, people are able to invest in ways that works for them and therefore, what GiveDirectly does well is giving their recipients opportunity to choose how to spend their transfers."

"I spend $100 to pay school fees balance for my children who had been send home and they were able to go back to school. I spend the balance to build a semi permanent two bedroom house for my family who we have been living in a muddy one bedroom grassy thatched house. First of all the, the space was so small and could not accommodate the ten of us(husband and eight children) we were really scrambling for the small space and live was never comfortable there as it also served as the kitchen. Now that I was able another house, my older sons have their separate bedroom in the older house and the young ones have their separate bedroom. I only imaged this kind of life and GiveDirectly made it possible for me to live it, I could not be more grateful than I am."

"At my old age, I live by myself and I can not do much to earn income. I was afraid that in the next few years, I will have nothing to depend on and I will become a liability to other people because I did not have a better job during my early years and so I don't have pension to rely on. When I received my transfers, I invested them on buying dairy cows so that I will be able to sell milk in few years time and earn income to sustain me. I spend $150 of my second transfer to buy a dairy calf, $90 to buy two goats and I have been spending the balance on daily needs."

"My business is not doing well at the moment. The last profit I made from the fish business I used to pay school fees for my grandson who is in university. Now I can only manage to buy a stock of $8 which cannot afford me meals in a day. I survive on a cup of tea and a meal at night, which is sad."

"Although I am blessed to have a good house and basics that I would have needed at my age, my son who got married a couple of yeas ago did not have a house of his own to live with is family and as a mother I used to pity him. Although he is hard working, he couldn't secure a better job in the city and he was struggling to provide for his young family. My husband who operates a general shop recently employed him as a shopkeeper but still, the salary that he earns is only enough for basic needs and he cannot afford to build a house for now. When I received my second transfer, I spend $200 to furnish a two rooms guest house that we had and gave it it to him to stay with his family. He was so happy for this kind gesture and I'm grateful that GiveDirectly made it possible. I gave the balance to my husband who added more stock to his business."
