"I used $160 of the second transfe to complete the building of a new house that I had begun. Our old home was only one room, so our kids had to ask our neighbors for a place to sleep, but I'm glad they now have their own room. I offered my spouse, who had recently completed his driver's education course, $100 so he could apply for a license. We will hopefully increase our household income once he finds employment. $85 I used to clear the debts our children owed the school in both secondary and primary school, which has provided them plenty of time for their studies as they are no longer sent back home. We used the remaining $185 to buy food that would last our family for a long period."

"I think the organization's brilliant notion to give people unconditional cash with no restrictions was great. It has given the despairing hope. People who once struggled to buy a meal a day now run successful businesses, some have enrolled their kids in school, and others have even purchased livestock. As a result, our community now has a more appealing appearance and has better homes. There have been no complaints about the organization so far, not even from the neighbors."

"I spent $200 on 12 bags of cement as well as the plastering work for my kids' room. It was composed of mud, which rendered it unstable because rain could wash the walls away. Because there is less dust, and plastered, I am happy that the house is more stable and tidy. Additionally, we have four children, three of whom are enrolled in school but who owed the school $150 in arrears, which I fully paid with the money from the second transfer. They are no longer sent home for school expenses, and I owe the organization for this it has led to improvement in their academic performance. Additionally, I spent $20 on them to replace the worn-out old sets of school uniforms they had, which has raised their self-esteem. I invested $50 to expand my modest fish purchasing and selling business in order to increase our household income. At first, it was unable to support itself, but I am pleased with how the income have grown and how I am now able to provide for our daily necessities. Since we did not have any and could instead borrow some from my mother-in-law whenever we had guests, I paid $42 for seven seats. I used the remaining $66 to buy food for my family."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well by making in house visits to every potential household within the village. This style or doing things sees every potential beneficiary not being left behind in the enrolment process. It also gives the officers an opportunity to tell each beneficiary all the information they may require to know before receiving the transfers. I am so happy that I was part of this program and for the way the officers handles me. There was no any kind of biasness whatsoever from the time the officers came to the time they left. Everything about GiveDirectly was just excellent and straightforward"

"A lot of things have happened since I received this money. My house has been without ceilings and cement floor in some rooms. But with this money, I will be able to complete my house. My wife sickness has actually dely the plan of completing my house. I was never thinking about putting ceiling in my house, but with the money I received from Givedirectly, I can now put ceilings in my house. I don't really know how to say it, but this money has brought great changes in my life. Things I never thought of doing all my life, I can now do it with this help Givedirectly has given me. Let God bless us all."

"Lack of reliable sources of income is a big issue here in the village. I'm a businessman running a pharmacy and an agrovet at Matanomanne trading center. Largely this community is made up of farmers of all sorts, and so those are the clients I have been targeting. Unfortunately it's been drought for too long that the farmers themselves do not have sources of income anymore, thus they can't even buy in good numbers. Market is also flooded because we're already more than ten traders of this type in just a small trading center. Most of the time I only make a net profit of $150 in a month. Without my wife's income, we wouldn't make it at all. She's a teacher earning $280 every month. But from that we still have to support extended family, pay school fees for our two children in boarding primary school at $120, as well as repaying loans that my wife took when we were building our family house."

"My biggest challenge is food security. I do not have reliable sources of income except for the casual jobs I do get around the village to dig, weed, or join in some construction work to be able to earn some money. Most of those jobs pays $2 to $5 per day which is quite too little to feed my family and pay school fees for my four children currently attending primary school paying a total of $60 per academic term.. My husband on the other hand used to work as a security guard in a nearby secondary school, but he was discontinued temporarily when he fell sick and got diagnosed with an airborne disease that isn't even contiguous when one is on drugs."
