Esther
received a $142 initial payment.
"Recognizing the immediate need for sustenance, we allocated $100 towards purchasing food that would nourish our bodies and fill our bellies. In addition to addressing our nutritional requirements, we sought to invest in assets that would provide long-term benefits. With this in mind, we decided to allocate $900 towards acquiring two sheep. These animals not only represented a source of sustenance but also held the potential for future income generation through breeding and the sale of offspring. It was a step towards greater self-sufficiency and a means to secure a more stable financial future. Education remained a top priority for us, and we dedicated $10 towards school remedial programs. By investing in their education, we aimed to equip them with the tools they needed to thrive and succeed. Every decision we made was driven by a deep commitment to optimizing the use of the funds we had received. As we moved forward, we remained grateful for the assistance we had received. The GiveDirectly transfers had provided us with a lifeline, empowering us to make choices that would lead to a more secure and prosperous life. We embraced the responsibility that came with this opportunity, striving to maximize its impact and create a better future for ourselves and our children."

Joseph
received a $128 initial payment.
"As I toiled away at work, immersed in the daily hustle and bustle, a name caught my attention—Segovia Technologies. The mere mention of it sent a surge of curiosity coursing through my veins. My intuition whispered that this was no ordinary occurrence. Could it be? Could this be the long-awaited GiveDirectly transfers that I had heard of? I knew all too well the struggles we faced as a family. With three children in school, their educational needs weighed heavily on our hearts. One was pursuing higher education in a polytechnic, while the other two were in the crucial stages of Form Four and Form Three. The costs associated with their schooling were overwhelming, and my work as a broker in selling goats simply didn't generate enough income to cover the expenses. The very thought of GiveDirectly transfers filling our lives with newfound hope and financial relief was nothing short of a miracle. It was not just the monetary value of the transfers, but the profound impact they would have on our children's future and our family's well-being. The burdens that had plagued us for so long could be alleviated, replaced by a newfound sense of freedom and possibility. With the GiveDirectly transfers at our disposal, we would no longer have to compromise on our children's education. We could provide them with the tools and resources they needed to thrive academically, unlocking their potential and opening doors to a future filled with endless opportunities."

Peter
received a $142 initial payment.
"First and foremost, we recognized the importance of honoring our debt for the borrowed cow. We allocated $80 towards repaying this debt, understanding the significance of fulfilling our obligations and maintaining trust within our community. To ensure our family's well-being, we set aside $80 for food expenses. Nourishing ourselves and providing sustenance for our loved ones was a fundamental priority. Recognizing the need for warmth and comfort, especially during colder months, we allocated $40 towards acquiring blankets. This investment would provide us with a sense of security and protection from the elements. It was a small but important step in ensuring our physical well-being and comfort. We understood that the limitations of casual work had impacted our ability to accommodate all our needs at once. We were determined to continue seeking opportunities for growth and stability and GiveDirectly came in, making the most of the resources and support available to us."

"The joy and excitement of our children were immeasurable as they discovered the new addition to our family - the four female goats. They were eager to take on the responsibility of herding and caring for them. It was not just about the immediate happiness they brought but also the opportunity to learn valuable skills and responsibility. With the school fees paid and the financial burden alleviated, we could now plan ahead and pay school fees in advance. This was a significant milestone for us, as it meant we could secure our children's education and ensure their uninterrupted learning journey. It was a testament to the positive impact that the GiveDirectly transfers had on our lives. It allowed us to plan better and provide our children with the stability and educational opportunities they deserved."

Stanley

"The biggest differences in my daily life after receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly, is twofold. Firstly, there is now an abundance of food available for my family of six, ensuring that our basic nutritional needs are met. Secondly, I now have the opportunity to visit the hospital for regular check-ups and to refill the medication that I am currently relying on. This newfound access to healthcare has brought about a positive shift in our overall well-being and has provided us with a sense of security and peace of mind."

Kobilo
received a $142 initial payment.
"Over a prolonged period, I have faced numerous disruptions caused by stray livestock from the neighborhood invading my compound, as well as my own goats, which have proven difficult to restrain and often damage tree seedlings and sun-dried food items. To address this issue, I made the decision to utilize the entire $200 to purchase barbed wire and chainlinks, intending to fence the homestead. Although I have yet to complete the construction of a gate, it has become significantly easier to keep stray livestock from entering the compound after erecting the fence. I am delighted that I now enjoy peace of mind, thanks to the improved management of entry points, and I hope to construct a lockable gate with subsequent transfers. Given my advanced age, living with my husband and two grandchildren, this financial support has provided us with a tremendous opportunity to tackle the challenges we have long been facing."

Tarkok
received a $142 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the abundance of diverse food options made possible by utilizing a portion of the $65 from my initial transfer for purchasing groceries. As an elderly individual, I am immensely appreciative of GiveDirectly's timely and generous support, especially considering my inability to work towards earning a sufficient income to afford such choices."

"We are afflicted with a myriad of insurmountable challenges that have made our lives unbearable. We are people of little means with no sustainable source of income. We have been engaging in casual jobs to at least get wages to purchase foodstuffs amid biting food insecurity. But paying school fees has been an uphill task for us, our daughter, Naomy just returned to school yesterday, she had been send home for school fees and we only manage to raise a paltry $20 out of the needed $240 for this term while another daughter who is in college requires $260. We are between a rock and a hard surface because we have no idea where the money will come from. Things have fallen apart for us, we are ever stressed and have had sleepless nights. We feel like life is unfair to us, day after day it is hope against hope for us."

"We struggle to make ends meet but it is a tall order, every day we are faced with numerous challenges and a difficult environment of biting drought, our area is arid and bare. We are peasant farmers and the little we get is hardly enough to cover our daily needs as well as raise school fees for our 3 children, 2 are in secondary school and 1 is in college. Every year we require more than @1000 for school fees, we have sold almost our entire livestock just to see our children through their education, other times we have done fundraising and sought bursaries from the government. Whenever school opens we scratch our heads on where to get the more, it seems not to get any better and it worries us alot since there is no light at the end of the tunnel, not to mention the other problem of food insecurity."
