"Every successful man has a mission to accomplish in life. Being such an ambitious one, I hope to purchase an additional 0.1 acres of land in addition to the 0.4 acres we currently own. We have constructed a house here, and thus we have no land to cultivate but only lease from the neighbors for $140, and therefore we wish to cut short on such expenses. I plan on using the $30 savings from the merry-go-round chama as well as the income from the maize sales since I will pay in installments until completion."

"I used $11 to pay the debt I had from the hardware stores, where I had taken 21 pieces of iron sheets to cushion the part of the house that had fallen due to strong winds, and some were for building a new house. So far, the house I am building is almost done, and it has cost us $20 so far. This means so much to me as a father with five children living under one roof. It has been difficult all along, and we have been trying our best to save some money so we could build a room for them with no success. On the other hand, some years ago, while I was doing my carpentry work, some thieves just walked in and took all my tools. I could not do my daily jobs as usual, and this affected our household income. When I received the transfers from GiveDirectly,I used $10 to replace the carpentry tools. This has brought back the motivation in me to pursue more different designs in carpentry work, with my family having so much trust in me. Finally, I had to spare some money so I could purchase chickens. I spent $15 on them, which would save me a lot, especially when I have visitors coming home and I do not plan on spending much on them. In terms of financial income, I will be in a position to sell them and cushion myself financially when need arises."

"Immediately I received the transfers, I went to buy stock for my business that I had but was closed down due to lack of finances to add on stock after selling most of the foodstuffs on loan to the people of the community, which later became difficult for them to pay having to know the struggles that they go through each and every day to put food on the table. Putting back the business took me $30, and as of now things are running well for us. Our children are happy now that they get three meals per day, which was a long story since drought hit our area and we could not even plant anything on the farm because there was no rain and scorching sun, which dried up the soil to an extent where no water could be retained in it. Another thing that was disturbing me was the state of my house. My house is standing on a rocky hill where the wind blows so strongly, and it has been falling bit by bit. My worry was that it might fall down fully, leaving us homeless. So without wasting any time, I accumulated all the materials needed to build another house and called the person who will be doing the construction, and all this took me $25. Right now, our house has been completed, and we are living happily. GiveDirectly came in so timely, just when I thought we would lose everything and end up being homeless."

"With the transfers, families have acquired assets, for instance, livestock; some have constructed houses; and some have educated their children, all because of the unconditional cash transfers. From the assets, they have gotten income, which in turn they have used to purchase food for the household. I am also glad that it is not a loan, so there is no worry about paying it back. I never wish for the organization to change its way of working."

"Finances make something impossible possible. For instance, I understand that without cash, one cannot move a thing, let's say an investment. I am glad that GiveDirectly has made life easier in the community by uplifting lives through unconditional cash transfers. Many families have acquired food as well as assets. I therefore wish the organization would expand this to other parts of the country."

"Education is the key to success, and every parent desires the best for his or her children. Being among them, I made this a success through the payment of $450 in school fees for my son and daughters in grades 9, 11, and 12, respectively. This could not be a success without the transfers because my family of seven depends on my husband, Richard, who is an active stock trader, to earn a living. Robert earns $50 a month, and all this pays for food for the household and partly for school fees. Sometimes my children are sent out of school due to arrears, but currently they are not. Alongside my husband's job, the family also cultivates maize on the 0.3 acres of land to harvest 3 bags of maize in a year, a produce that has been low, unlike the past 4 years when we could harvest 8 bags of maize in a year on the same land. This has been affected by the harsh climatic conditions and diseases."

"Since the climatic conditions look favorable lately, I am regaining some hope in maize farming. For instance, lately the rains have been constant, and farmers look forward to a great harvest. Because of this, my plan for the next year is to cultivate maize on my 2-acre piece of land so as to produce food for my family of four as well as earn the household income through the maize sales. As a result, I will not only borrow food from neighbors but also donate some to my children when they need it. I hope to accomplish this by using the profits from the milk sales alongside assistance from my children since I am elderly and can no longer fend for the family fully."

"In the Kalenjin culture, owning a cow is a sign of wealth, as it produces food and income for the family. When I received the transfers, I spent $430 on purchasing a dairy cow, as I had not had one before. Previously, I used to buy 2 liters of milk daily for $1.6, which was expensive compared to the $4 income I earn from the boda boda taxi business daily. At the moment, my cow produces 5 liters of milk daily, of which I sell 3 liters for $1.5 to the milk vendors in the community. From this income, I have paid school fees for my children in grades 2 and pre-primary 1, as well as purchased food for my family of five. I further used the rest of the transfers on fencing my compound and purchasing chairs for my house. I can now comfortably welcome visitors into my house without fear of victimization."
