"I was struggling with unavailable clean water for my family. Unsafe water was the root cause of why most of my household members kept complaining of abdominal illness and recorded cases of amoeba. The cost of living in the family went high since we used part of our little family income to seek medication. This pushed my thoughts high and decided to purchase a plastic water tank with KES 20000 of my transfers. I manage to harvest plenty of rainwater for my family which saw our family health improve significantly. I am happy that I am no longer stressed with the huge school fees arrears for my three children in secondary school having spent KES 30000 to pay school fees."

"I am residing in a tiny one-roomed house with my spouse and 5 children. It was not enough to accommodate all of us and the household items. My grown-up daughters of ages between 15 to 20 years had to seek shelter from our neighbours every night which distressed me a lot. After receiving the first transfer, I had begun building a new and spacious house but was yet to finish. I used $150 of the recent transfer to complete the construction and now I am glad to own a decent house like others in the village. In addition, I spent $200 to support the education of my firstborn daughter who is in form four by clearing the arrears and paying part of the term one fee. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to fence our farm since the maize crops were constantly being destroyed by livestock from the neighbouring home."

"The challenges I am currently facing are, poverty which has made everything had forexample children have started school but we have not paid any single coin for them and this worries me alot because I am not even sure when I will get money to pay for their school fees.
Another challenge I am facing is drought, evrything i planted didn't grow, my cabbages in the next garden there have all died up from the garden. It's true when it rains we have landslides but atleast during rainy season we have plenty and enough food for our children,no one starves."

"Since I am an old woman, I fall sick every now and then, hypertension is the biggest challenge since 2012 yet its very expensive to get the treatment. Poverty is a leading challenge too .This has made life harder, I can't afford treatment, not even a balanced diet for my health.
My bad health has stopped me from doing my business that i was doing years ago to provide for myself."

Joan
received a $421 second payment.
"I am a local dairy farmer while my husband is a local farmer who grows maize for both family consumption and for sell in the neighborhood.Since our five acres piece is not enough for both farming and growing napier for the cows, I decided to buy a half an acre piece of land that I can plant the grass. The piece of land was going for $550 and because I had paid $250 from my first transfer, I spend $300 of my second transfer to settle the balance. I spend the balance to buy household utensils and food that lasted us for two months. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support as I would not have achieved this and many more were it not for the transfers."

"I decided to purchase some iron sheets to fix my grass-thatched house after receiving the second transfer because it was leaking. 20 pieces cost me $198. I was able to complete the renovation for a $80 labor fee.
I just finished the makeover, and now I have a lovely house with no leaks. I chose to spend $80 on a sack of maize because it was a drought season and I wanted to make sure my family had access to food. After that, since I had no bed at all, I spent $100 on a bed and a mattress. I once utilized some empty cartons to help me sleep on the floor. In order to have something that can reproduce and to always remember GiveDirectly for the wonderful deed it performed for me, I also spent $70 on two goats."

"When I received the second transfer, my top objective was to pay off a debt of $140 that I accumulated as a result of sending my spouse off in style. I needed to pay off my obligations as quickly as I could because I had borrowed some money from friends. After paying off the loan, I was glad and relieved because I had been worried about how I would be able to repay them. After that, I spent $150 to take my sick child to the hospital. I am currently relieved that he is doing well. For an additional $80, I purchased a mattress because I was sleeping on a mat and lacked one. I preserved the remainder for the support of my family."

"Giving us financial support is something that GiveDirectly does exceptionally effectively, in my opinion. With this money, everyone is free to prioritize their spending and make sensible financial decisions. At the individual level, everyone will benefit greatly from this. Yet, I can't think of anything that GiveDirectly might be doing better. Everything they do is flawless and extremely well-organized."

Robert
received a $421 second payment.
"I chose to spend $380 for a used motorbike because I didn't have any other regular income than making charcoal. I use the motorcycle to transport clients from one location to another for business needs. I am overjoyed that I now have a source of income. In addition, because of the great distance between my house and the water point, it helps me gather some water. To get the water at first, I had to pedal a bicycle, which was really exhausting. Thereafter, in order to provide my family of six with food security at home, I spent $70 on a sack of maize. I spent $35 on a mattress because I didn't have one and was sleeping on empty cartons. I'm glad that, in contrast to before, I can now sleep soundly and comfortably. I set aside the remaining money for my family's usage after spending $30 on my three primary school-aged children's tuition."

"As far as my observation is concerned, I was very satisfied with your services same as many people in the family. What GiveDirectly does well is doing everything independently without involving stakeholders who might politicize the process. That was a job well done."
