Gona
received a $28 sixth payment.
"After I completed my high school studies, I had not enough money to join college so I was forced to go look for a job so that I can sustain myself. Life was really unbearable until GiveDirectly came through for me. The moment I received my transfers I was able to go look for a good job and I was lucky enough to have been chosen to be a substitute primary school teacher. I teach them and at the end of the day I get paid and the money I receive I normally save them. I am planning to join college and go pursue my career of becoming an automotive engineer. I believe that the future is bright and the little savings plus the transfers I receive will enable me to secure myself a good school and after I graduate I will start up my business. With the business I start, I will be able to make huge profits that will help me give back to my community because that is what I desire most."

Victor
received a $160 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life will be the completion of a pen following the purchase of goats once I receive the second transfer. Even though I have yet to purchase goats, I am confident that the project will thrive once I bring them in, as the first step of building them a house was critical. Every night, I will lock term in, making it difficult for prey to access and preventing thieves from driving them away at night. This is a long-term investment for my family that I hope to pass on to their children in the future."

Charlotte
received a $440 initial payment.
"I had been living with my biological parents for some years after divorcing my husband. I lacked independence and respect, therefore this did not make me feel at ease. When I received the transfer, I only spent $200 to buy food for $100. I took this action because it was extremely challenging for me to make charcoals for sale though I struggled. After all, I had no alternative way of putting some food on my table. Thereafter, I bought some clothes for $50 and paid $50 for school fees for my primary children. I kept the remaining $300 to buy a one-acre piece of land to start my home. Since the plot costs $750, I opted to wait for the second transfer so that I combine it with the $300 so that I purchase the plot. I'm overjoyed to have taken the first step in acquiring a piece of land by saving some amount and also getting in touch with the seller."

Dogo
received a $440 initial payment.
"Hunger and poor shelter was the main challenge my family and I were facing. Since I relied on charcoal burning, It was very difficult to make ends meet and we used to go up to at least two days a week without getting some meals. As of now, I am very grateful to GiveDirectly for the support it gave me. I was able to fix the shelter issue by constructing a house. I also managed to buy some foodstuff which has seen us getting some meals regularly not like before when hunger was terrorizing our family, thank you to GiveDirectly."

"The challenges that I am currently facing are all money related challenges. I have children who are working yes but they have great we responsibility of taking care of their families among other needs. This has often left me and my ageing wife helpless and yet we can do very little to raise income at our old age. There are projects that I have always wanted to accomplish and which requires money but getting this money has always proven to be tough for us. All these projects have had to stall until such a time that we will get some money."

"The greatest challenge that we are currently facing as a family is lack of enough money to adequately meet all our family's needs. We have not been able to raise enough money to pay school fees and to buy food for our family. Despite my husband having to stay away from family in order to make extra cash and despite the fact that we have made some harvests from our farms. All these have not enabled us to meet all our needs adequately. We for example have one of our children who recently completed his secondary school education recently but has not been able to join any tertiary institution due to lack of money to pay his school fees. We have other four children in various secondary schools who all look up to us. We can only hope that things will get better with time and that we will have better living standards as a family once we receive the transfer from GiveDirectly."

"The challenges that we are currently facing as a family are quite many. It has been tough relying on odd casual jobs to make ends meet. The situation have even been worse with the current weather conditions. Following the recent few days of scorching sun, it has been hard to even get those casual jobs. The subsistence agriculture that we rely on have also not been so profitable. This is largely because of the small acreages of land that we till. This situation left us to rely entirely on my husband who does motorcycle taxi to earn a living. The motorcycle that he uses was bought on credit terms and we had huge balances to clear. My husband could not afford to pay off the debts and at the same time buy us basic household needs. The situation that even got out of hand and we had to finally let go of our one dairy cow that helped us feed the family. This was one of the lowest and challenging moments in our lives. We can only look forward to getting some money and buying at least one dairy cow."

"The challenges i am currently facing are first of all school fees, getting school fees for myself and my other 2 siblings are a big problem, it is by God's mercy that my 5 maternal aunties contribute to rise 40 dollars for my school fees per term and 13 dollars for each of my sisters since our mother is mentally hill and our father doesn't care about us for the last many years ago.
The other challenge i am facing is hunger, since i am now the brend winner of the home and i don't work, the fact thst i am a student,we sometimes sleep without food.If we don't find food in the garden then we go to school on empty stomach. Our father doesn't care about us at all,he married another woman and that's where he lives he barely comes to check us. Even as I speak now,I have no idea on what we are going to eat for dinner."

Kenga
received a $28 second payment.
"We have been experiencing a severe famine, which has caused us to focus on looking for food. Even though with the transfer, it has been easier for me to take my children to school, there are moments when I feel uncomfortable sending the small amount of money I receive for fee payment when there is no food in the house. As a result, I set a goal at the start of this year to prioritize using some of my transfer to buy food. Since I am unemployed, I always find it difficult to provide for my family. I will also direct some of it toward raising livestock. Because I have children, the flock will come in handy if I ever need extra cash for an urgent need."
