"Between 1995-2016, my husband was working in a mining company, at least he was able to get $30 per month, but now the life had changed too bad, my child was dropped out of school when she was 16 years old because I can't afford her school fees when she was in her second year of high school. I have sold all my 2 cows in order to pay my debt in bank, and because there was no fertlizers, I was not able to get enough yield to feed my family. I used to have a small business of selling livestocks (sheeps and goats) in 20221 but now that business failed because of using all my investment of 200$ in feeding my family and paying schollfees of my children"

"Receiving these transfers from GiveDirectly has been of great help to me and my family. I live with my wife and my three years old son. I am a dentist by profession and own a clinic and my wife is a police officer. The second transfer came when I needed it the most and it helped so much in building my two cows’ house, a dream come true. Whenever it could rain, the cows could be rained on and the rain would destroy their food, and during drought, they would starve due to lack of enough food. The money also helped in clearing the $7000 land debt I had plus fencing the same land. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support."

"I used to have my own cow but I sold it for buying a big land to feed my family of 5 people , but I can't get enough yield without fertilizers. No electricity in our house, my children don't sleep well ,no beds ,no matelas that affected their performance at school. Last year 2022, the climate changed, I haven't got enough food to feed my family and the price of food was increased."

"My husband Rucamumakuba left me since 1994 because of poverty before he was very rich, he was having a bar in our village selling beer and meat. Living alone, doing everything on my own was very tough and that leads me to severe poverty. I was living alone now in the house that I have built after selling my own cow and now the house is very old, need to renew it but I can't afford the price. I am 73 years old, I can't work for money $1 per day in others farms , it is not easy to get food"

"The main challenge we are facing is that we have a small land in which we grow our crops. It is a challenge because we don't get enough production from it and for that it requires us to go for searching other income generating activities like cultivating for others so that we can get money to buy food to support our own produce . The other challenge is that we don't have a cow and because of that we are lacking manure to use in our agriculture activities hence the low production. In addition, living in this muddy house without fencing is another challenge, we would like to cover it with cement and build a fence."

"The main challenge we are facing is poverty as it is hard for us to find something to eat. The reason why I am mentioning poverty is that , compared to other neigbors some have cows and big land to cultivate but for us we even sometimes go to cultivate for others in order to get the food. You can also tell by looking the state in which our house is. We have small land and we cannot rely on it's produce, it requires us to rent the land when we have money to pay for, if not we cultivate that one only and continue to cultivate for others. We don't have our own cow except the one we are raising for the neigbor."
