Dorcas received a $428 second payment.
"I spent part of my second transfer purchasing a modern wooden bed and a mattress for a total of $145.  Previously, I used to sleep in the traditional bed, which was small and caused me lots of pain. My two children could always complain of back pain and fatigue every morning, which has even been affecting their performance in school. Therefore, I feel there is a great deal of relief since we have been sleeping comfortably and soundly like babies. To add to that, I bought a solar panel for $50. This has been helping my children, especially at night when doing their school assignments, and charging my phone and those of my neighbors at a fraction of the cost. Also, I feel more secure since previously my property would get stolen because of the darkness. Later on, I bought new clothes and shoes for my children, who were going to the Christmas celebrations. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying food and paying some of my bills."

"Toward the end of the year, I wish to have repaired the wall in my house that crumbled. To accomplish the renovation, I already acquired the building poles through previous transfers. Currently, am working on saving enough money to hire someone who will complete the exercise. After that is achieved, I plan on buying goats for rearing. I believe owning livestock will help me raise funds for my family’s needs in the future when I sell them. "

"Since am still in form two, my focus is on completing high school with great grades that will secure me a spot at the university or college. I would be happy if I graduated from high school and throughout university without having to miss classes from unpaid school fees. Although this is a nearly impossible wish given the tough economy and low financial status of my family, I hope to be able to finance my education through Give Directly’s cash transfers and my chicken-rearing project.  "

Victor received a $350 second payment.
"Before receiving my second transfer. I saved about ksh 33000 that I made from selling bananas and maize and added ksh 45000 that I received from Give Directly to buy a second-hand hand motorbike for ksh 78000. I made this choice because it is not sustainable to rely solely on agriculture at this time of dramatic climate change, so I purchased the motorcycle to start a transportation business as a secondary source of income to help meet the needs of my family while we wait for the rains."

"It is now 1 year and beyond since I completed my high school education and currently doing nothing. My main goal is to continue with my education and I have been saving part of my transfers to help me pay my school fee. I also want to open a business and employ someone and the income from the business would also help in paying part of my school fee as I continue with education."

"My goal for the next one year and beyond is to start a chicken-rearing project. I would want to rear chicken in large scale and later sell some of them to buy livestock ie. goats knowing that with the projects in place, I would be in a better position even when faced with a financial challenge. The transfers form GiveDirectly would help me attain my dreams since I would be saving some amount of money on a monthly basis."

"I have a strong passion for education and am determined to make sure my son has a bright future by making sure he attends school without mishaps. My strategy is to use the transfer proceeds to purchase goats, which will ultimately multiply and increase my initial investment. I'm free to sell some of the goats if my son needs to pay for school in the future and use the proceeds to pay for his education up to the highest level he will be able to reach."

"Right now, I'm sleeping on a bed made of sisal twine, which is very uncomfortable. I've started experiencing excruciating back pain, and as a result, my health has gotten worse. My top priority for the year is to purchase a brand-new wooden bed and a cozy mattress to sleep on. This will solve all of my issues and improve my health."

"Repairing my house and making sure it is fit for habitation is will be my biggest accomplishment this year. This will allay my worries about the house collapsing and hurting my family members physically. I also want to launch a vegetable and fish business. This will increase my revenue from selling charcoal, which will enable me to become more financially secure and easily meet my family's needs."
