"We had been struggling to pay school fees four our 3 children who are in various secondary school. The transfers came as a big reliever for the stress of raising school fees that we were undergoing. We were able to use KES 30000 to clear all the term's school fees plus the arrears. It lessened the burden of paying the school fees and it gave my children ample time to study, the one who was in Form 4 got a B+ plus and he is due to join the university later this year. It was quite a remarkable achievement and the fruits of the transfer was felt. We were extremely happy about the transfers and the subsequent results that our boy obtained."

"GiveDirectly is a unique NGO, unlike others. The aspect of unconditionality and the transfers being a grant is so amazing and humbling. I have never seen something like that before in my life. The organization does well in transferring funds in two tranches and following it up to ensure that people receive the money. They actually want to transform lives and they have made significant progress."

Paul
received a $421 second payment.
"We had always wanted to have a decent house but it had just remained a dream since we never had the means. The house we used to live in was grass thatched and it was in a bad state and not conducive to living in. We were so delighted when we received the transfers, and without hesitating, we used the entire amount to build a timber-walled, iron-roofed house. We are happy that we now own a better house though we are yet to finish work on it we have since occupied it and we are so happy about it, we have since gotten a new status."

Sally
received a $436 second payment.
"I am a widow who fends on my children on my own. Life is a struggle. I am aging at the moment and running household chores like smearing the floor of my house is an uphill task since I have a lot of difficulty bending down. It is for this reason that I decided to use the transfer to cement the floors of my two houses. I am happy that this has relieved me of the stress that I used to experience before. I used the other part of the money to purchase a water tank."

Kiptonui
received a $421 second payment.
"I plan to build a better house since the one I have at the moment is old and dilapidated. It is not conducive to living in. When it rains it gives me and my family a lot of trouble since it lets water in and so it becomes cold and when there is intense heat sun during the day it is extremely hot. So it is not conducive to living in it. My main aspiration, therefore, is to be able to look for finances to enable me to realize the dream of having a better house."

Joseph
received a $421 second payment.
"I wanted to build a house but I had deprioritized it because of other competing needs that I wanted to fulfill first. Now that I have somehow made progress I intend to embark on the project and God willing be able to take it to completion. The house I stay at the moment is in a deplorable condition and I feel bad about it, something need to be done. It is a big and costly aspiration but I intend to do what is humanly possible to achieve the dream."

"Through its monetary giving programs, GiveDirectly has achieved outstanding success. Many people in my village have been able to better their lives. I have a major investment. Before, I was having trouble supporting my family because of how things were tough on my side. I haven't yet identified a situation in which the organization hasn't performed properly."

Nzingo
received a $436 second payment.
"I decided to remodel my home after getting the second part of the transfer by plastering the exterior walls to keep them from being washed away by rainfall when it rains. By doing this, the house becomes more stable than previously to endure splashes of rainwater on the walls. For $150, I spent on 23 bags of cement, and the work cost me $40. Together with replacing some damaged roofing timbers, the roof refurbishment cost $120 to complete. Following that, I gave my son $200 to outfit his charcoal-selling business, which he uses to supply merchants in large quantities. I spent the remaining money to buy food for my family because I am a peasant farmer and it hasn't rained in a long."

"The greatest challenge I have faced was when I planted my crops at the top of the hill last year and due to the heavy rains from October, they were carried away. This greatly affected me on planting more crops there as I am an old lady I feel like a burden to my children who send me money to support myself."
